Below, we provide a short list of useful research conclusions:

  • The production of the functional beverage was successfully integrated into the company’s existing egg white beverage production line.
  • The functional beverage did not differ significantly in its properties (texture, colour, viscosity, taste) from the corresponding non-fortified beverage.
  • The vitamin concentration was not affected by the heat treatment and was stable throughout the product’s life.
  • The selected forms of the two vitamins (B12 and folic acid) in combination with the presence of egg protein appear to enhance their bioavailability significantly. The role of the egg protein remains to be determined.
  • Administration of this innovative functional drink appears to increase vitamin B12 and folic acid levels statistically significantly in as little as one month while decreasing homocysteine levels in patients with Mild Mental Disorder (MMD). All three of these substances, their absence and/or excessive increase, are risk factors for the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
  • No statistically significant difference was found in the characteristics (level, latency of onset) of the amplitudes of cognitive evoked potentials N200, P300.
  • No statistically significant change in hippocampal volume was observed during the year. During the study, no patient with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) developed Alzheimer’s disease, whereas the rate of progression from MCI to Alzheimer’s disease is approximately 15% per year.

  • Additional conclusions, more detailed:

  • Administration of the supplement, does not alter the rates of mRNA or protein turnover, but causes translational up-regulation of methionine synthase by shifting mRNA from the ribonucleoprotein to the polysome pool. The B12 responsive element has been identified by deletion analysis using a reporter gene analysis in a 70 bp region located at the 3′ end of the 5′-untranslated region of methionine synthase. The cellular consequence of the B12 response is a 2- and 3.5-fold increase in the flux of homocysteine through the transmethylation pathway.
  • After administration of the supplement, significantly different metabolites such as 2-hydroxyvaleric acid, maleimide, methionine sulfoxide and serum N-acetylglycine were increased (P < 0.05 after FDR procedure), while cystine , serum cysteine, methionine, and oxalic acid weredecreased (P <0.05 after FDR procedure).
  • Administration of the supplement increased metabolic markers of myelin integrity and regulators of membrane dynamics, such as plasmagons (a special type of ether phospholipids) and other long-chain phospholipids (C38-40). Changes were also observed in lyso-phospholipids, which are considered to be potent biologically active lipid mediators that exert cellular effects through specific G protein-coupled receptors. Correlation analysis confirmed direct relationships between plasmagens, phospholipids, lyso-phospholipids, and sphingomyelins and vitamin status B-12 and nerve function.
